Take A Book
In Trengganu we have a saying, Dök masuk bok, of an idea or a person that is insignificant as to be trivial or ridiculous. Takdök ddalang bok is another for something that is outlandish or unthinkable. In both it is the book that is the common denominator, that gives recognition or gravitas to the idea. I’ve heard my mother, an illiterate person, pooh-pooh many ideas by proclaiming their ridiculousness. Takdök ddalang bok she would say to someone who suggests that we spread belacan like butter, on bread. “It is not found in the books.” And then of an inconsequential or göng* person, "Dia dök masok bok!" His name’s not worth listing in a book.
Central to this is the sanctity of books even in the minds of ordinary people. Even in minds out of the ordinary, say in a prelude to war, it is recorded in the Malay Annals, the Sejarah Melayu, that prior to going into battle, the warriors were read chapters from the Hikayat Hamzah to put them in good spirit. This is not the only instance surely in our common history of a book being read to raise the spirit.
I am mulling these thoughts because I'm a great fan of bibliotherapy, a movement that is gaining strength in Europe. Books can be therapeutic, which is why we should all pay heed to that children’s programme that was once popular on British Television that went by this cryptic name, “Why Don’t You…?” The full length of that title that was sung in the introductory part of the programme was, of course, Why Don’t You Switch Off the Television Set and Do Something Less Boring Instead?
Well, tell your kids: why don’t you?
And what brings this thought is a dear friend who phoned us one evening to say that she was feeling down in the dumps so she took her copy of GUiT and read and read it, and it gave her a tremendous boost. Well I never; in this instance, it was I — not her — who was uplifted. If, in a small way, I’ve contributed to this idea of bibliotherapy, I’m glad. And thank you, Jane, I appreciate your thought.
In Bibliotherapy books are introduced to ‘lost’ children to help them discover themselves. The child reader who lacks self-confidence, or who cannot find a place comfortable enough in this adult world sometimes identifies herself with a character in the book she reads. Children who read find themselves, and a place for themselves in this wild world. A simple idea, but it has worked for many people. Prisoners in jail find a purpose in life through reading, through studying and identifying themselves with characters in a play, a short story, or a novel.
On my return to our family house in Kuala Terengganu recently I was saddened to find that some of the books that I’d read in my childhood are now mere shells, their contents eaten by the anai-anai, the white ant. Rows of Father’s old kitabs too had gone into the anai-anai bellies, and I dread to think but must say that those old books must have been satisfying and therapeutic for those anai-anai too, but I just wish that they don’t have to destroy in order to build.
But if uneaten, where do dead books go? I borrow Zafón’s idea, from ‘The Shadow of the Wind’,** to the cemetery of forgotten books, of course. What a therapeutic book Zafón’s has been for me. I am a suburban traveller, a lover of train rides, and I found it extremely soothing and comforting to read about the couple on their train journey to the ghostly house. Never mind their destination, but the journey in itself was worth it.
And a very happy and therapeutic new year to you all!

AG,
I came to know you thru Kak Teh's blog, of which I also came to know only about an hour ago thru Google. Well, what a great finding indeed. FYI, I am a Terengganu boy myself, from Gong Badak, and now in KL working round the clock to earn a living.
I am very delighted to know that you're from Terengganu and you're a great author! Your blog has bring back a lot of memories from my childhood as well. And, yes, I'll ask my dad to get a copy of GUiT from "kedai pok loh yunang" before his flight back to KL tonight. A must have book in the year 2008 and beyond!
I wish you all the success!

Dear Mr. Goneng,
Your books and kitabs eaten by anai-anai. Terengganu heritage and culture are being eaten by (unnecessary) developments. I really hope your book will set the trend towards the and appreciation and preservation of our history and origin by all (Indian, Chinese, Malay, French...). As you rightfully said it - without history, we are nothing!
luckily for nobody ask for 'bok 3-5' when purchasing GUiT from Kedai Pok Loh Yunang even though the modern version of it continuously making people spend more than they could really afford.
Dear Sir AG,
As i proclaimed long ago ,you should have been awarded as the first recipient of Trengganu Highest Litreture Award aptly named "Anugeroh Sastrawang Terbilang Embong Awang Dagang".
I was saddened that nothing of sort happen on your recent visit to Trg....the importance of the visit must have escaped those people in high places...nimcompoo.
The title of "Dok masuk Bok" to certain personalities ....I came across one in my Kg.He is of slighly diminish cerebral comprehension thus his output were mostly forgivable by everybody in the kampung. One thing he did that I remember vividly was when he swam in the 'swimming pool' in the surau.....everybody just 'ngeleng ' ....'dok terkate sebab dia org dok masuk bok!!!'

To Sdr. Khairil of Ampang Jaya:
I do not know if your dad can still get a copy from Keda Pok Loh today, we just run out of stock there. (in hand we have 26 orders waiting). We are now waiting for 2nd printing to be ready later this week. Hopefully I can send to KT by Monday next week.
But I do have 2 copies with me in KL (actually for someone who have booked and will not be picking up until end of next week - as he is out-station. He has OK if I sell off his copies first).
I am also staying near your area (Ampang Hilir).
Re: Anai-anai infestation:

assalamualaikum.
as i wrote this, i've just seen you hours ago when you came to my univercity to give a speech regarding to your book. i was quite sad but mostly i was upset with myself. nothing in particular is the reason but somehow, few weeks ago before you came i saw the book at my uni. i was,and i still do, fascinated by it and having the temptations of purchasing it myself. but giving it a second thought, considering my financial situation at that time,i have to stop myself.then, when you come and said "if you have the first edition ,hold on to it because we are already sold out." i was nothing at that time but upset with myself.because not being able to own something that would be so precious.
it really is an eye opener. what you've said bout if a person doesn't have a past, there wouldn't be a present even a future and that what matters is the people.
i am a student, currently studying tesl in my fourth semester(sorry in advance if wrote badly) and i am struggling hard to achieve the best. but after listening to what you've said i couldn't help but agree.
i've been through quite a lot so far especially with my peers. but all i could think of is that everything happens because i did something wrong even when i'm not.i put the blame on me. but after listening to you, i realize that everythng that i went through. is just to teach me to be a more matured person.
you might not read this or someone else might. however, i would still want to say thank you...it was just a mere 1 hour meeting in a lecture hall...but what you did could change anyone as though you're very close to them.
i thank again.

Janganglah dok salahkan kerajaang sokmo dan selalu ada prasangka. For your info I had offered to AG to arrange a grand launch in KT with the help of my YB to coincide with Visit Terengganu Year 2008 and declaration of KT as a Bandaraya but AG chose to have a simple one at Alam Akedemik. AG is so humble about GUiT and didn't expect the publicity that he is getting in KT.
The Terengganu Government under Dato' Seri Idris Jusoh had recognisded AG as one of its icon and invited him back to KT on 7th January to share his experience and nostalgia with all pemimpin masyarakat in Terengganu which was held at Heritage Bay Resort in Pulau Duyung. The Terengganu Government had bought 300 copies of AG's book and distributed to all present. I managed to get AG to autographed a copy AG. Thank you AG
AG,
Hope you still remember my late sister, Sin Khim who is your classmate and my brother Sin Bin. who is your Head Boy in SS. My sis Sin Khim passed away when I was only 14 years old.I was in Form 3 in SS then and had little memory of her. If you have any memory of her during your schooldays, would appreciate if you could share with me.

Awang Goneng,
I too got to know about GUIT through Kak Teh's blog. I managed to get GUIT at Times, Pavilion before Christmas, there were none after that, must have been sold out.I was planning to give it as gifts to my friends. I have been regaling about your book to them.
Although I am only 1/4 Trengganuian(is that correct or should it be Ganuan), your book brings back memories of tales of life in Trengganu as told by my maternal grandparents. I am also reminded of the delicious delicacies of Trengganu.
The state should use your book to promote Visit Trengganu Year and engage you to conduct tours of places mentioned in your book.
Congrats and best regards to you and Kak Teh.

Tahniah Pak AG,

AG,
Book is not just to be read, but to be digested. But nothing starts in front of TV, read a book is like eating rice, and digesting a book is like assimilating the nutrients.
Kudos, have a nice day.
How so true. We like “to destroy in order to build”. We tend to develop tomorrow at the expense of yesterday. While other people take pains to preserve their history we seem to destroy history with impunity. The case of the destruction of the original town of Bukit Besi is a glaring example of mindless and careless pursuit of development at the expense of a town which made Terengganu so famous those early days from before the Second World War right up to 1970. The corollary of this is our young’s lack of understanding and appreciation of our counry’s history. This is reflected when so many of our young do not read and understand the Constitution of our country such that when there are debates on the removal of the special rights of the Malays as enshrined in the Constitution our young seem not to care or even in some cases support such removal.
Dear AG,
My father-in-law attended the event mentioned by Ah Soon of Ladang and he got his copy of GUiT signed by you. He hoped a few moment more with you but since you were like 'goreng pisang panas' he did not want take much of your time.
Anyway, he remembered a reply to your pantun:
Awang Goneng botok licing
duduk nnoneng bbini kucing
It goes like this:
Semek ttuek keladi air
hidung kepek mata berair
Hope I got it right... anyway, HAPPY NEW YEAR 1429 to you, AG.
salam AG,

Salam Mr Awang Goneng.
I'm very sorry if I came to the wrong column to write this, but I do hope that it is vice versa.
Studying social sciences at IIUM Gombak, I came across a poster inviting students for a talk by Awang Goneng. The 'Awang Goneng' itself is unique, dragging me to surf more, and I found that 'Growing Up in Trengganu' is amazing, since we do share some similarities in both Trengganu and Kelantanese dialects, which is my hometown.
Unfortunately, I could not manage to attend the talk tomorrow evening for having urgent appointment, thus, I would like to ask about the book 'Growing Up in Trengganu', where I can find it, for its culture does adore me, and I just do not want such passion goes wasted.
I hope to hear from you in my email soon.
